Route planing websites or Garmin 800 - Which one to trust mo

Yes, ok, another question involving my Garmin... sorry...
I'm not actually trying to see if my Garmin is broken this time... I did a figure of 8 route around Bullbarrow Hill (Dorset) last night, taken in Bullbarrow from 2 different roads up to the top...
I normally use RidewithGPS to do most of my route planning and the profile showed that each climb topped out at 10.9% and then 16.5% respectively...
Whe actually riding (well trying to) up the hills last night, my Garmin was telling me I was riding on 15% and 22% sections (not 10.9 and 16.5% sections)...
I know that some GPS devices struggle to accurately record percentages, so. Is the Garmin likely to be more accurate than the website, or vice versa...?
PS... The second hill beat the crap out of me :shock: :shock: :shock: :shock: :shock:

Which ways did you go up Bulbarrow?
The route from Woolland hits over 20% in places and is a killer. My Garmin has suggested over 30% at times on there.

Park up in Shillingstone and have a gentle mile or so to Okeford Fitzpaine where my route starts. Straight up to the top of Bullbarrow from there, then head down to Hazelbury Bryan and around to the climb from Woolland...

You're right... A proper killer... :shock: :shock: That first section properly knocked the crap out of me... A lot harder and steeper than I remember... But a great route to get my climbing legs sorted...
That is the section that RidewithGPS only states is 16.5% at its max...0 -
I don't know the hill in question but I would say the Garmin will be more accurate unless there was something amiss with the barometric altimeter (e.g. faulty, blocked port etc). Did the elevation profile look normal?
Elevation and grades based on route plotting software is notoriously shifty. RidewithGPS routinely overestimates the total elevation gain of a plotted route by 10-20%. It's also worth noting that sites like Strava will completely disregard your Garmin's elevation data and recalculate the elevation for your entire ride, so whatever you do, DO NOT trust that for anything.0 -

The Belchawell Street way up at the start of your ride is tough until it flattens out, and then you had the Milton Abbas kick later too followed by the grind up to Okeford Beacon. Fun!0 -
Going by what it reads when we go up climbs with a known gradient, I'd say my mates 800 is pretty accurate. I've planned routes with RidewithGps, and it's given the max gradient as 8% when I've known for a fact there are a couple of climbs well into double figures.
Total elevation though has always been really close to the Garmin reading.0 -
Thx folks... The elevation chart works just spot on... and very helpful when climbing to look at it (I find...)Which ways did you go up Bulbarrow?

One thing I didn't like, apart for the insane amount of climbing, was the insane amount of flies... At one point I had around 50/60 buzzing around my head... It's hard enough to get up these things without having to fly swat as well.. .
Gonna think about parking at the top of Bullbarrow next time and starting there... Trying to do that 22% segment first as opposed to second, but maybe that then brings in the first segment at the very end... after <Milton Abbas and the drag back up to Okeford... :shock:
It's just hard whatever way you look at it0 -
There are easier ways up Bulbarrow!
There's the 5 km route up from Stickland (left as you head out of Stikky towards Okeford Hill).
The route the you descended from above Milton Abbas to Stikky is quite a nice climb.
The Ansty to to the top of Bulbarrow road is another nice way, which can be approached from Milton Abbas, Ansty or Hazelbury Bryan.
A little further afield and you've the climbs to Shaftesbury and of course Zig Zag and Gold Hill.
The flies only hang around you if you stop or are going too slowly - just pray none are the Blandford Fly - google it if you don't know about it.0 -

Haha... Yeah I know, I think I chose possibly the 2 hardest accents of BB hill there are... Gonna head out again over the weekend or early next week to put my legs through some more pain...
And those flies... I seriously couldn't go any faster...0 -

You can make it use the barometric data by adding "with barometer" to the 'creator' tag in the GPX file before you upload it.
E.g. the GPX 'creator' tag on my etrex 30 normally reads
creator="eTrex 30"
before I upload I change it to
creator="eTrex 30 with barometer"
and Strava will use the barometric data.- - - - - - - - - -
