Front Chainset - Gears Crashing

Hi,

Recently had a new set of wheels put onto my 2009 Giant 2.5 as result of an accident. LBS also advised on replacing the cassette and chain (9spd). I still have the original FSA triple (50.39.30t) chainset on the front.

Now the chain keeps crashing off the chainrings when I put power down when setting off or going uphill. Took it back to the LBS who didn't really help much. Gears are indexed nicely so I don't think it is anything to do with a bent deraillieur etc etc.

Might I need to now change the front chainset for a new one as the teeth do look slightly worn. But I never had this problem with my old chain and cassette!

If a change is needed, then I am really struggling to find a new triple chainset with the same size chainrings that will fit onto a square tapered BB. I know the done thing now is a compact double but with the current cassette, chain and derailleurs, a compact won't fit (i don't think?).

I have found the following - http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/shimano-tiagra-4603-triple-10sp-chainset/rp-prod67232?gs=1&gclid=CKrxn7G-ucYCFayWtAod2LEGmQ&gclsrc=aw.ds which is a Shimano Tiagra 4603 Triple 10sp Chainset but it doesn't have a square tapered hole and also says its 10sp. Can a 10sp crankset be used with a 9sp chain and cassette.

Thanks in advance for any help. Need to get my commuter back back up and running.

You can use the Tiagra chainset but you'd have to replace your square taper BB with a Shimano Hollowtech II one.

    eg http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/shimano-tiagra-4600-bottom-bracket/rp-prod67221

If you don't have any of the tools you'd need to weigh up the cost of buying them vs the cost of paying the LBS to do the work.

You'd need a crank extractor to get the current chainset off, and a BB tool to remove the cartridge BB (and a large adjustable spanner or suitable socket wrench; they can be stubborn)

Then you'd need a Hollowtech BB tool to screw in the outboard bearing cups, the little plastic tool to tighten the NDS preload cap, and an allen key to tighten up the crank pinch bolts.

Alternatively, if your BB is still running smoothly, touring triple cranksets are available in square taper, eg from Spa Cycles: http://www.spacycles.co.uk/products.php?plid=m2b0s109p3 £60 bargain!

You might have to accept slightly smaller chainrings; eg 48/38/28, but that's no biggie on a commuting bike.

Plus on the tool front you'd only need a crank extractor.

As a further, possibly cheaper still, alternative you could simply replace the worn chainrings on your existing crankset. Again, have a look round the delightfully clunky Spa website; they do hundreds of the buggers.

Make sure you can undo the chainring bolts first though!

Better still - why change the whole chainset, when you just need to replace the worn chainrings.... and not all three as I suspect that it'll be just the middle and maybe the outer rings that need replacing.

And if you're not replacing the smallest chainring you can probably do the other 2 with the cranks still attached to the bike...

Do try the chainring bolts first though...

I had thought of that - will do more research, but I suspect a new crankset may work out cheaper.

£35 for both rings? Cheapest I've seen a chainset is £60...
