Need advice: Giant Defy 5 vs Ridley AL2 Fenix

I would like to get into road cycling and am trying to decide between two intro road bikes. The first is a 2015 Giant Defy 5 all aluminum with Shimano Claris for $620 USA or a Ridley Fenix AL2 (Aluminum w/Carbon Fork) featuring Shimano Tiagra for $850 USA.

I really appreciate the advice from more experienced riders.

Also, do you really need the carbon fork?

    Anyone who's ridden a bike with an alloy fork would say yes, go for the carbon one. And Tiagra's a significant step up from Claris.

    But buy the one that

    a) fits you best, and

    b) you like the look of best
