How much faster is a club group?

Five riders can all ride at 18mph solo. What speed should they expect to ride at as a group?
We're not talking about a well drilled time trial team here - just a bunch of average riders taking turns at the front. No hills, no wind etc.
Anecdotal testimony is valid.

18 is a decent pace to ride all day, bit faster on the descents and bit slower uphill but general conversational pace of 18mph / 30kph is normal.0

Without much more effort, I would plan for a group to move at least at 20mph based on those solo speeds (with your caveats of no wind or hills etc.).0

20mph but then you'll probably stop more, there's always someone..0

I'd say 1.5 to 2 miles an hour quicker depending on the course, could be much quicker if it's pan flat. You'll nearly always end up completing the same ride in a similar time as there's normally an extra pee stop, flat tyre, small mechanical, split at traffic lights etc etc when there's more riders.0

It's difficult to put an exact figure on it tbh- I do go faster when doing a team time trial, but every group is different. You might even find that your average speed doesn't increase noticeably, but you'll be able to keep it up for longer.
Best way to find out is go out with the guys and practise- the trick is to push a little harder on the front than you would normally (although not too much as not blow the group apart- in this case slow is smooth and smooth is fast!) and peel off before you get tired- you'll need a little kick to join onto the back of the line.
Most importantly, communicate with each other- look well ahead and have fun!0 -

A whole 24 mph+ faster?
Remind me never to go for a cafe run with you guys. The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.

Have you tried pedalling harder?I'm sorry you don't believe in miracles0

During the ride, a group might be about 2mph faster.
At the coffee shop afterwards, that will have increased to 3-5mph faster. Over the course of the next few weeks, the speed of that group ride can have risen anywhere up to about 32-33mph.0 -

Plus, add 24+ mph to 16 mph and I am struggling to take you chaps seriously. The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
