Can anyone recommend some tyres for road use? 26 inch wheels I am currently using city jets but after 4000 miles are in need of changing limited budget £30-40

Same again. One slick is the same as another .Transition Patrol - viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=130702350

They most certainly are not!
The City Jet is the go to budget option, but the better tyres do feel a bit livelier and nicer to ride and are a bit lighter as well, Conti sport contacts are a good option, for something a bit faster due to the profile the Panaracer RiBMo is also good as is the Maxxis/WTB Slickasaurus, the only one I've tried to stay clear of are the Spesh Nimbus, wasn't impressed at all. If you want to get a little extreme, you can't try the 1.2" slick from Decathlon or the 1.0" Conti Grand Prix.Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0
