Hi, I have a problem with my 8 speed shifter, it only shifts 4 times eventhough its an 8 speed. You can see from this picture that the indicator is not going all the way to the "L", and when i cycle through the gears it only clicks 4 times, whether or not it is set up on the bike or off the bike. I am a bit worried to open it up as i wont know what it is i am doing. Its also probably worth noting that the shifter doesnt have a nice crisp/loud click as other shifters have.
Does this happen often with peoples shifters? How can it be fixed?
I can take a picture of it opened up if needed.

Have you tried pulling the cable manually when downshifting?Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0

Could be that the teeth have slipped on the inner mechanism. Had this happen on a set of Alivio 8 speed a couple of years ago. The screw that holds the base of the big thumb lever into the casing had worked it's way loose so that the teeth it connects to internally could wobble up and down a bit and slide above or below the opposing teeth of the ratchet mechanism. After slipping i could only get a few of the gears at the end of the range. Opened it up and managed to finagle it back to it's intended position and tightened everything back up again and had no further problems.0

I understand what you mean. Ill open it up and have a look and take pictures and post back. Hopefully i can identify the problem straight away0 -
With the Alivio it was easy to identify as i could get the thumb lever to jiggle up and down a little, though it wasn't until i had the top off that i could see how this was affecting the ratcheting behaviour.0
