Balcony storage

I am due to move into a new flat in a couple of weeks and with space being at a premium I am planning to store my bike on the balcony.
The only problem is the balcony in uncovered and therefore open to the elements. I plan to buy a heavy duty sheet or something similar but was wondering if this would be adequate to protect my (carbon) bike?
Any other suggestions on how to protect my bike are also welcome.
Cheers

Look up Bike Parka - a friend bought me one for my bday. Thick enough not to worry about, not so thick it's a nightmare to use. Easily covers a 56cm bike and frame and comes under the bottom of the wheels for full coverage.
