Snapped chain

Recently snapped my chain how many links can be taken out before I need a new chain I think I will need to take 3 out to fit a missing link

    It all depends on how it was sized before but you will lose the use of some gear combos.

    so probably best to just replace with a new one then?

    If it was sized correctly before (and production ones aren't always) then yes, I'd fit a new one, but first I'd check if the useable bit was the right length or not rather than assuming it wasn't (or was!).
    Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.
