Back from a 13 year bike break....

Hi all,

Having had my old Specialized Hardrock stolen back in 2002 and then subsequently passing my driving test in 2003 I'm returning to the bike scene after a 13 year break.

In my teens I was out on the bike every day, it was always with me, was my sole mode of transport at the time and that's probably the last time I was 'fit' too... I loved my bike, never saw another like it and I was gutted to open the garage one day and find it missing :(

This was my bike back then: (Not my actual bike unfortunately but it looked exactly like this, but with Rock Shocks and dirt tires)

A few years later my dad and brother bought a matching pair of Specialized Hardrocks, but unfortunately my dad passed away in 2006 and the bikes sat in the garage gathering dust until the inevitable happened and my brother came home one day to find the garage broken into, and his bike and my motorbike (pit bike) stolen. The only silver lining was that they left my dad's bike behind. I took my dads bike back to my house (which is slightly more safe) and that is where it's sat ever since.

I now have two sons of my own, one of whom is 4.5 years old and just starting to learn to ride. Just to show him how it's done I rescued my dad's old bike from the depths of the garage.

Both innertubes were shot, the gears were seized and it was filthy and oily. I totally dismantled it and cleaned up the parts individually and put it back together (I forgot how much fun it was working on bikes).

I took it out for a ride just to test it out, not really sure where I was going but I found an off road path near my house and ended up biking for miles! Loved it! :)

So now I've got the bug again been out every day since! I've even just bought my wife an almost identical (but silver) Specialized Hardrock for £100 off eBay, so she can enjoy it with me :)

I think i'll probably swap the brakes out for mechanical discs on my bike at some point, and maybe get some black rims, but I'm only planning on doing light trails, so not going too extreme on it, it's an old bike now anyway.

I did have an issue yesterday where the chain kept slipping under load so might need to replace the chain or make some adjustments.

Fingers crossed I don't get this one stolen as no amount of money will replace it, as it was my dad's - What can I do to it to give me the best chance of getting it back if it does get nicked? (I.e security mark etc)

Cheers guys!

Use Bikeregister for the bike, also make sure you have the frame number and some decent photos's, but there is never a guarantee.

Welcome back to the sport by the way!

Thanks very much, I went down to the bike shop today where the bikes were originally bought and they gave me the frame number, I have now registered the bike (and my current one) with Bikeregister with pics and set the status to stolen :D

Highly unlikely It'll ever turn up but you never know! Good site that, didn't know about it before
