ticking headset
This happened a few times since owning my specialised tarmac sl4 a couple of months ago. Click occurs when i put weight on the handlebars and again when i take my weight off the bars. Loosen and tighten the headset and it disappears for a few weeks then returns. Any thoughts on why this happens and also how fix permanently?

Yeah thanks, I got a bit carried away and ended up cleaning out the headset when only wanting to re-torque!
Anyway, I did notice that two of the bolts on the stem weren't that tight, so maybe that's what it is. Fixed for now, hopefully for longer than 2 weeks this time.
On a side note, when cleaning the headset parts, I spotted that the top bearing racer has the silver washer/clip above it but the bottom racer doesn't have one. Is this normal?0 -

Yes, there's often extra spacers, split rings and such like above the upper bearings.
And the term is race, not racer0 -

headset ticking again. Been 2 weeks since it last did though. Only ticking when a fair bit of weight put on bars.
Have undone bolts below top cap and tightened top cap down slightly more and ticking has gone away again.
Is it normal for headset top cap to loosen over time?0 -

^agreed. Once you have tightened the stem bolts the top cap serves no purpose - it's only there to preload the bearings but the stem is what keeps everything together.I'm left handed, if that matters.0

Sounds like your steerer bung isn't tight enough. Take the top cap off, then there should be a larger hex bolt in side, loosen that, seat it as far down as it goes and tighten it all up again.www.conjunctivitis.com - a site for sore eyes0

ok this bung could have been tighter. how tight should it be? also, when tightening up a headset, is it best to lift the fork and tighten down the top cap or does it not matter?
thanks0 -
nvm, just found pdf for specialised expander tube and it suggests 9nm. seems quite high but will go with that then tighten top cap to about 2nm or enough to stop play in headset. hopefully this will fix the issue0

Sorry to nag on but the tick is back. All bolts torqued correctly and with copper slip on. Any ideas what else this could be? Internal cables ever tick?0

are you sure it is the headset? could be the valve tapping against the rim?www.conjunctivitis.com - a site for sore eyes0
