Scratched stanchion

I had an argument with a bit of granite earlier today and have scratched the stanchion on my pikes. It's not that bad but I suspect bad enough
Any suggestions re a DIY repair would a gentle rub down with some wet and dry help? is this likely to cause more problems?
Someone suggested a rub down with a very fine wet and dry, a coat of black nail varnish and then another gentle rub down. Anyone have any thoughts on this?
Cheers

Don't know much about them but saw this advertised a few months ago. Stanchion replacement.
