Hi there,
I'm new to mountain bike maintenance and have got a couple, of questions.
I'm looking to upgrade the group set of my mountain bike but wanted to do it in stages.
do I have to do it all at once or can I do it in stages?
If it's ok to do it in stages which parts do I need to do together?
Thanks for your help.
Pete.

Rear mech and rear shifter need to be from the same manufacturer too.0

It is best to do connected parts at the same time changing cables all the time can be a pain.
If changing the number of gears some parts have to be changed at the sand time with some makes, but not with others some parts are usable over a range of different speed sets.
So to sum up. Yes no maybe. It all depends on what you have now and what you want to have."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

AH ok, so for example if I was looking to go from 8 speed to 9 speed shim and setup it would be best to do the rear mech, cassette, cable and shifter at the same time?
And then could do the crank, front mech and shifter at another time?
Is there any restriction on the hub or frame as to how gears you can go up by on the rear cassette?
Thanks for your help guys!0 -

I prefer a SRAM shifter (rocket) to Shimano although I'm currently running an ST shifter which is different again.Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0 -

That I know but the simplest way of ensuring they are compatible is to use the same manufacturer.0 -

Get your facts right."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."
