using 5600 levers with 4600 brakes

I use something like that (some sort of 105 levers with Tiagra calipers combo). I wouldn't suggest taking any risks where your brakes are concerned, though I'm not aware that there was ever an issue.0

As you said the cable pull is slightly different. I have used a similar setup (6600 levers / 6700 calipers). The braking is slightly less powerful (perhaps 10%-15%) but , perfectly safe. With softer pads, braking is on par with original spec.0

I've got an older 5600 sti groupset, and have bought a 4600 front caliper to go with it.
But just found out that it may not be compatible.
Apparently the cable throw is different.
Has anyone used this combo?
No, but the cable throw is not different. Even if it was, it doesn't matter.0 -
Are you sure the throw is the same?
It all looks the same.0 -

It all looks the same.
4600, 5600, 6600, and 7800 have the same pull ratios.
If you look at the Shimano compatibility charts though, they even say that the 4600 levers (same pull as 5600) are compatible with pretty much the whole range of Shimano groupset series brakes - see the compatibility chart here on page 16:

Not so^^^. 4600,5700,6700,7900 are the same newer ratio
4500,5600,6600, are the older ratio.0
