Chainsets mixing SRAM and Shimano

Having a bit of a mental block with compatibility. Does the make of crankset have any consequence with the rest of the Groupset? I.e. Can I use a shimano crankset with SRAM Force shifters?

I think if I do I need a SRAM FD and RD but I can't recall whether the shifters will work fine with another crankset, assuming they are all 10 speed.

The crankset doesn't care what else you fit..

Shifters front and rear mechs from each groupset to be the same. Everything else can be mixed.
