Seatstay damage - terminal?

Derailleur hangar snapped on a 7% incline and derailleur jammed in between spokes, cassette and drive side seatstay. Wheel is off to be repaired by builder, new derailleur arriving tomorrow but its damaged the inside of the drive side seatstay on its way! Its a gouge and I reckon it at least 1mm deep possibly more - its hard to measure exactly as I think the metal gouged out is heaped up a bit around the edges but its defo at very least 1mm deep. Its a Spesh Sectuer Al frame and I reckon I will have to take it in to be inspected but would appreciate any opinions anyone may have on if this frame is a right off or safe to ride. I have included a ruler in some of the pics to try to help give a sense of magnitude. Thanks in advance for any advice

  • If you take it to someone who specialises in welding Ali then I would suspect that an angle grinder to open the crack and then reweld should be possible.

Take it to your LBS and the advice will be to scrap it.

    It's fine.
If you are worried about it, mark the ends and see if it grows.

I think it'll be fine. The Secteur is not built to a particularly low weight; there's even a good chance that there's a spigot on the dropout casting extending into the seatstay tube. I'd knock the big burrs off and continue riding it.

  • Thanks to all for the advice/comment - looks like so far 3 think fine 1 more doubtful.
Going by the build up around the QR your paint looks fairly thick so most of the damage at the scratch might be paint damage.
Good point I hadn't thought of that at all as a possibility; must say it looks like its metal that's been folded/pushed up around the gouge but with silver paint and an Al frame its very hard to distinguish - cheers for the thought though.

That would be re-assuring if there was - hopefully Spesh will know for sure if that's how these are constructed - thanks.

doesn't look too bad - as above there's paint and laquer there too to get through first

Abrade the area to remove the burrs and paint and see how deep the metal is gouged, if worried then as above go and see a metal fabricator or frame builder who works in aluminium and get an opinion.
  • Took the frame to the Spesh dealership where I bought it this afternoon and they inspected it and said its fine. Not structural and none of them, including their head workshop guy would have any reservations about riding it. So thanks to all for advice and if I don't ever post again, anywhere you'll know they were wrong and I died in a tragic frame collapse incident
