Creaky Headset - Help Please I'm Going Insane!!

Hi All,
On my Boardman HT (2012), I dropped the stem a couple of spacers about a year ago now. When I did it, soon after I noticed that the headset area of the bike started creaking slightly when going along. This is quite quiet but particularly noticeable when going at slower speeds (I suspect due to less wind noise than anything else) and is now really annoying me - it annoyed me last summer but it faded away during the winter when it got colder. It's now back in full force and really annoying me when riding along.
Is there anything specific that I should be looking at (IE have I not tightened the headset cap enough or too much) that could cause this? Or is it just a good idea to undo everything and start again?
I haven't touched it since I last did it (mostly because once I get home I forget until I go out again) so any ideas?
Thank You!

when you change the stem height you change the cable positions - check the cables0

I had a creak that drove me mad for ages to the point I got a new headset fitted. Turned out to be where the cables went into the frame. Spray of GT85 gets rid of it...for a while0
