Shimano front derailleur compatibility

Wondering if anyone could help me out.
Building up my girlfriend a commuter/tourer. Mostly using old parts I already had. One thing I do need is a band on front mech (the one I have is a braze). The levers are Ultegra SL (6600), so they need to work with them.
I read something about 5800/6800 front mech's not working with older levers. (Different cable pull?). Is this true as 5800 mech's seem to be a bargain atm. Wondering if there are any other issues or whether I can just stick a 105 5700 mech on there? (obviously, everything is staying as a double)

It will work ok. There's no indexing on a double so no problems.0

Use your existing mech, just get a band on to braze on adaptor collar, about a fiver.0

+1 to this suggestion. I thought my Racelight Tk had a band on front mech till I stripped it down and found that Epic had built the bike with a braze-on mech + adapter.
Which was handy when I transferred the kit to a CR1 frame with a braze on mount.0 -

A bit torn on this, cheapest adapter I can see online is £8ish. And a new band-on 5800 mech is only £14...
If I had an LBS that stocked that kind of stuff, it would be fine. But i'll have to order online whatever I do.http://www.KOWONO.com - Design-Led home furniture and accessories.0 -

With that price differential I'd go for the new mech every time.
£15 from CRC for a new 5800 FD

The 5700 is the same price but having used both I find the 5800 more positive in operation and a bit smoother. The initial set-up is a little more fiddly than with the 5700 but the benefits outweigh this.0 -

Done. Ordered new 5800 mech.
This is the first complete build i've done (upgraded and changed parts a lot in the past). It's very satisfying, just annoying I have to wait for it to be delivered, as i've done everything else! (and i'm too tight to pay for next day delivery  )http://www.KOWONO.com - Design-Led home furniture and accessories.0 -
5700/6700 mech would be fine
expect your shifters won't have enough cable pull for the 5800/6800 mechs - let us know though0 -

Some people online seem to have done this upgrade, I can always send it back if it doesn't work. I'll report back...http://www.KOWONO.com - Design-Led home furniture and accessories.0 -

cool, hope so, be good to know.
i know shimano often state that X isn't compatible with Y when it's not the case0 -
Well, I can confirm it definitely works.
Received this morning (excellent delivery time from Chain reaction). And now fitted.
It doesn't just work, it's the best shifting front mech i've used. Big improvement IMO from the older ones, just a much lighter force required and super quick shifts. It's kind of obvious from the much longer arm, and makes you wonder why they weren't always like this. I expect The pull is different, and maybe it works even better with the correct 5800 levers, but all I can say is it's a big improvement.
Thanks for all the advice, hopefully this will answer someone's future question.http://www.KOWONO.com - Design-Led home furniture and accessories.0 -
