I'm going to be ordering a Boardman FS from Halfords but I'll have to get it delivered, is it a matter of putting front wheel on & turning the bars or do I need to do a full tune up gears etc?
Bikes:
2013 Mondraker Dune XR - XX1 XO1 Hope, Easton Carbon, Fox
Voodoo Bizango XT - Hope, Pikes, Mavic

  • Can't you get it delivered to store and let them build it? Then get it home and correct it :)

Get them to build it then take it home and check it - was a case over on the road forum where a guy bought a boardman road bike, assembled it himself and it then broke - Halfords couldn't accept responsibility for the bike breaking because they didn't build it. Let them do the job and check it/ get it checked by someone in the know when you get it home.

To answer your question, it's just putting some bits on yes, and they can't avoid the warranty by supplying it in a box.
But you need to adjust stuff regularly anyway, so I would check everything anyway, no matter what shop I was buying from.

  • There was a guy over in the road bike section that had a mech go into spokes, came off bike snapped frame.

Halfords would not fix for free as they claimed they didn't have the opportunity to do a full check on the bike to ensure everything was tightened.

I would give them that opportunity, then fully check it myself.

I'm not able to get to my local H as I have busted my leg, so delivery is my only option

I had exactly the same with ZeroG Giant after they set up a new bike. They wouldn't accept that their mechanic set it up like that and claimed I had taken it home and changed the rear mech set up to allow it to move in to the wheel.

I had one delivered in store after ordering online. Came in a box, they guy gave me a spanner tool thing and a generic book thing on how to build it. You can still take it for the 6 week check thing if you want. The bike itself is already built / setup in the factory, all you have to do is put the front wheel, pedals, seatpost and handlebars/ stem on.

Well Halfords were wrong. The bike was not fit for purpose and they cannot override that legal obligation by introducing a clause to inspect it first - which incidentally is NOT intheir terms of sale.

  • FIT - bars, front wheel, pedals, saddle
    TIGHTEN - all bolts
ADJUST - Caliper positions, limit screws, cable tensions, fork/shock pressures

    You don't get a 6 week if it's boxed
