Crankset Removal
Hi guys
I am undertaking a thorough "pre" summer clean of my road bike - Focus Cayo Evo 2014. In short, I have stripped it down to the frame and will clean, re-grease and rebuild it with a new chain, cassette, cables and tape.
I am hoping that I can clean out the bottom bracket without having to replace it... fingers crossed. As it's a PF30 BB I would need to visit the LBS to get a new one pressed in.
Anyway, it would be nice if I could even get close to looking at the BB, but I cannot get the crankset off!
It's an FSA gossamer compact, BB30. I have removed the cap over the "spindle" and have also undone the 10mm allen key bolt. Having built another bike with a BB30 bottom bracket, and the same crankset, I thought that the arms would just pull out of the BB. They won't.
This is what I can see...
I have tried tapping the non-driveside arm to see if it will come loose and have tried pulling at it. Nothing.
Is there anything I am missing? I may just give it a good spray with WD40/GT85 to see if it is just tight due to 3000 miles of crap accumulating.
Any thoughts gratefully received.
Thanks
Matt

"I have removed the cap over the "spindle" and have also undone the 10mm allen key bolt"
I wonder if they are self extracting cranks? Could you have done this the other way round; leave the cap in place and unscrew the allen bolt so it bears on the underside of the cap and extracts the crank?
(I am unfamiliar with the crankset so could be talking rubbish....)0 -
If it is FSA BB30 cranks... then 'undoing' the NDS 10 mm hex (normal direction) will self extract the ND crank.
You then take a rubber mallet to knock the spindle thru to release the driveside crank as it may be tight.
If you dont see this
then you have probably undone too many things...0 -
I suspect you've removed the self-extractor cap: you refer to the "cap over the spindle" which is not supposed to be removed on FSA cranks. You'll need to reinstall the allen bolt, then reinstall the cap (you may need a special tool to snug this down properly), then undo the allen bolt leaving the cap in place and it will pull the NDS crank off the axle as above.0

Here's a similar thread showing some bits you should have.

If its a pre-built bike, you may not have been given these parts.0 -
And so it is! Thank you all.
I was a proper wally and had removed the self-extracting cap. I reinstalled the bolt and the cap, gave it a good turn with the allen key and, guess what?... Off came the crankset.
Thanks again
Now trying to sort out how to route the cables through the frame with a cable guide having gone awol. Wish me luck!0
