I have a problem with my Shimano 105 rear mech which I have not experienced before and therefore don't know how to sort it. Most of the time when shifting up and down through the gears things work well, then i will make a gear change and start peddaling and there is nothing there for a full reveloution of the pedals, then it resets itself and things are back to normal. It's as if the chain jumps off and then back on again, but I know that's not the issue. Any help with a cause and remedy would be appreciated.

That sounds more like a freewheel failure - the pawls not re-engaging after a freewheel. A good clean out and regrease might be in order.

^ That is what I was thinking, loss of drive due to the pawls in the freehub not engaging correctly. How old is the wheel/hub, what mileage has it done?

I have Mavic Aksiums with only 1100 miles on them. Just over 1 year old.

Matters not, I had a Hope freewheel fail after a couple of hundred miles. Pull the freehub and have a look. On mine one of the pawls had gone awol, never did find it!

You relate changing gear to the appearance of the phenomenon - not sure why this should trigger a freehub problem as you shouldn't be stopping pedalling whilst changing gear? Could be that you're getting failed shifts - usually upshifts - where the chain doesn't quite make it to the larger sprocket then slips back? This can often be traced to a cable sticking issue or a bent hangar?
FFS! Harden up and grow a pair :D
