Retro ain't slow...

I've decided to use my 1980s Sannino more... so I made a few changes, trying to keep the core of the original Super Record groupset.
Changed the Nemesis tubulars back to a pair of more mileage friendly and low maintenance clinchers (TB 14), now fitted with 26 mm Panaracer Gravel King, ideal for Strade Bianche and other off road stretches. They do well on tarmac too.
Replaced the original Turbo saddle with a goat skin recoated Fizik Antares... saves some weight, I like the bum-fit more and it looks more aggressive too.
Friday evening we did 55 Km in the Chilterns with give or take 700 mt of climbing in two hours, so it's no slouch...
I have done various retro events in the past with this (Eroica 2005-06-11; Retroronde 2012-13) and the plan is for next year to enter the newly born Eroica Hispania.... 187 Km with 3,000 mt of climbing in the Rioja region... should be a corker!

The TB 14 are nice... they are not as snappy as the Nemesis + Corsa CX tubs were, but on the up side, I don't need to go around with a rucksack full of spare tubulars...

How do you rate the Panaracer Gavel Kings and what size do they come out at on those rims?

They are nominally 26 and come at 25.8 mm on the 23 mm rims. On narrow rims I have heard they come at 24-25.

They are very sturdy and cut resistant for the weight... the drawback is that they are not as racey or supple as a pair of Open Corsa... I see them as no nonsense tyres for riding on all sorts of terrains, but still quality rubber. The alternatives (Challenge Strada Bianca and Vittoria Pave') are much more expensive and more fragile

I love those bars... they're Cinelli... the clamp area has been machined down to 26 mm from 26.4

I don't think you'd want to get past the first step!

    Bike looks good though.

Love that paint scheme. Lotto's Ridleys had that classic style last year and were amongst the best looking in the peleton IMO

That is indeed very pretty. However, I can't help but think that the saddle looks out of place. Is a Regal compatible with your bum? IMHO, the best looking traditional saddle.

They sound like a good training tyre that should be still nice to ride. If you can comment, would you rate them as similar in property and quality as Vittoria Rubino Pro IIIs? Just wondering because Pro III's can be had pretty cheap.

Annoys me abit somtimes when people say i'd be loads faster if upgrading to a modern bike with STI from my steel DT geared bike?

I would be faster though if a lost the 6kg weight i've put on since last summer.

Oh that is nice. I would have kept the nemesis rims on though howver the TB14 look the same so no loss!

challange strada boanca for me did 5000km without punctures. Never had that from any tyre. So I would say they are not fragile. Rode over plenty of gravel when it is very wet too. They cut up nicely but thats it. The tyres are still useable but wont fit under the guards I have fitted to the bike.

It doesn't get used enough to justify expensive tyres. I ride it 3-4 times per year

That's nice, good to see that it's being looked after and still used.
