Hi I've just got a new bike (condor Fratelloand part of my aborted wants to take my child and the Taff Trail in Cardiff. I'm a bit in the dark as to how to do this. Can anyone recommend good models? Do I need a rear rack?

Any advice is welcome thank you.

By the way I saw Hamax siesta or smiley

I've got one you can have if you want to collect from Chepstow way? It bolts to the seat tube, I had it bolted to a steel Diamondback MTB (30mm ish OD).

Caveats - It's 2nd hand, scruffy and lost the padding and a foot strap.
Caveat 2 - I hope I've still got all the bits.

From our experience, Hamax is good, Yepp is better. Seat tube mounted works, but rear rack is better (more solid, lower centre of gravity and can use for 5+ seat for the school run later).

Personally, I'd avoid the cheaper ones.

But if you get a rack make sure it's suitable. The Steco Safety, specifically made for child seats, is the one we use. Note that Tubus say theirs are not designed to be used with child seats and there was a story on the CTC forum a while back about one that had failed (they're obviously brilliant for touring).

For the very young, have a look at the Yepp front-mounted seat.

Or have a look at a cargo bike - not used one ourselves but they do look good.

For longer trips a trailer is best IMO.

Sorry for the delay I thought I'd replied already. The missus isn't comfortable to use 2nd hand but it's a kind offer Cracker.

I've been doing a bit more research into the Yepp and Hamax. I'm still looking at the need to attach a panier. Preferably Ortlieb. It's amazing how none of the companies refer to comparability.

My wife has the Yepp on a Steco Safety rack and regularly attaches panniers (Ortleib rollers FWIW) for shopping. At least on her MTB turned all-rounder there isn't clearance for a rack with a seat tube mounted child seat.

    Hope that helps.
