Recommend a GPS tracker

Hi,

Can someone recommend a GPS tracker?

Cycling in Germany this summer, so looking for a tracker that will have European maps.

I'm not after anything too fancy, just something that can map my ride, tell me the speed and distance and have the option to upload the journey on social media.

Not wanting to spend anything over £200.

Cheers in advance!

    1. Buy a sim in (insert Country)
    2. stick it in you unlocked mobile phone of choice
    3. Run Strava.

Speed distance mapping Social media linking all sorted.

    Thanks.

I have been using Strava app on my iPhone but it runs down the battery. Thus, looking for a GPS tracker.

Do you mean you want actual full maps on the device? If so you're going to need a garmin 800 810 or 1000 series. I doubt you can find one for that budget though. Cheaper units like the garmin 500 or 510 dont have maps but will allow you to preload a course which gives you a basic trail to follow and does give turn instructions if you upload the route from plotaroute.com. You would still need to upload the gps trace with a computer though for use on social media etc (510 can connect to a phone via bluetooth actually, but even that is probably outside you're budget)

I use a garmin 500 in the above way and it does everything I need it to. Like the previous poster said though, if you want everything in one unit a smartphone is going to be the only way at that budget. Perhaps get one of those battery pack cases to extend you're battery life?

Edge 810 is approximately on your budget from bike-discount.de.

I think I'd be tempted to find the extra £90 and get the 1000 though.

The cheaper option is what was suggested earlier with a local SIM, an external phone battery, and a mount, probably looking about £60 for the battery and mount but it's a bit clunky.

I used my phone for years to do route finding, ride tracking etc, but now I have a Garmin and prefer it.

I use an eTrex 20 and use maps from www.talkytoaster.co.uk - they are OSM based and they are awesome (and free!)

I use them for MTBing and for Road biking - I plan all my navigation before hand using Garmin Basecamp and download it (the same maps are compatible with basecamp).

Another alternative is to get a decent size power bank attached to your i phone.
