Anyone done the Colle Finestre? We're planning on riding it in a few weeks. Doable on normal 23mm slicks, or do you really need something wider?

they've just manicured it for the Giro... any tyre will do.

Apparently Aru let half a bar of pressure out of his tires for the climb ;-)

  • Looked a bit rougher than anticipated yesterday, you might be better running 25s. Very jealous here, would love to ride the Finestre.

I've done the Eroica 3 times on 23 mm tyres and it's much rougher than that... the problem would be downhill... going up roughness doesn't matter and the descent on the opposite side is tarmac

In the end some of our group used 25s, but most 23mm slicks, which was absolutely fine. Some parts are very smooth, some with quite a bit of larger gravel, and towards the top some very loose sandy corners, but on the whole perfectly doable on any standard summer tyres.

It's a stunning climb, certainly very steep, but also very regular, so good to get into a rhythm.

The road was built by the army to carry artillery, so the gradient had to be constant... basically they built at the lowest possible constant gradient imposed by the geography... it's a beautiful piece of engineering
