Mavic Crossride problem

Got a year old set of these wheels and recently a problem has developed. The rear wheel is not spinning freely at all. It doesn't appear to be catching on the brakes and it improves when I loosen the bolt through but I need to loosen it almost too much to make the wheel spin freely.
The timing of this is crappy as I have my yearly Lake District trip in a week so need to get this sorted ASAP.
I'm hoping it isn't bearings that need replacing as I haven't a clue how to replace them. Help!

    sounds like the cones may be a little tight and need adjusting - get some cone spanners or take to your LBS
