Racing style thin wheels for Brompton clone?

Hi -
I have a folding bicycle that is a Brompton clone - a Merc, similar to a Flamingo - is there any possibilty to fit thinner racing type wheels/tyres, and if so does anyone have any affordable recommendations?

I did look into building wheels for Bromptons in the past...

There is a limited choice of narrower rims for 16 and 20 inch and it is possible to source very short light and even bladed spokes. Upgrading hubs might be more difficult, given they are typically proprietary parts with not much in the way of alternatives.
