Hi,
I have an Ultegra 6700 RD and I'm trying to find out if its a SS or GS? It has 30T stamped on the side plate, is this the GS type? I am wanting to fit a 12-30 cassette and trying to find out if I need a new RD? 8)

Either way the fact it has 30T stamped on it suggests it's OK for use with the cassette you want to fit.
Google for images of the SS and GS mechs, or look at the exploded views on Shimano tech docs if you still want to know which you have

Have a read of this. Seems the earlier SS mech had a max of 28T. The revised mech went up to 30T. I suspect you have the latter.
(try to pick your way through the arguments between people who made the early mech work with a 30T sprocket vs those who've had the misfortune to rip the mech off the bike)0 -
Cheers, I'll have read of the docs0

10sp RD-6700-A SS (stamped 30T) max rear sprocket 30T with a double crankset.
10sp RD-6700-GS is (not sure if this model is also stamped 30T) is for use with a triple crankset.
I would hazard a guess that the GS is also revised for a max rear sprocket of 30T, based on the archived pdf Technical Service Instructions SI-5X90B-003 which appears to be referring to the earlier RD-6700-SS and GS models and states,
Type SS
Total capacity 33 teeth or less
Largest sprocket 28 T
Smallest sprocket 11 T
Front chainwheel tooth difference 16 teeth or less
Type GS
Total capacity 39 teeth or less
Largest sprocket 28 T
Smallest sprocket 11 T
Front chainwheel tooth difference 22 teeth or less
To determine whether you have the SS or GS, measure the distance between the guide/tension pulley fixings, if your bike came fitted with a cassette with a largest sprocket of 27/28T or less and a double/compact crankset, then it is likely to be the RD-6700-A SS which will take a 12-30T cassette.0
