My chain snapped on my way to work last week luckily the lad I was riding with had a spare quick link in his bag, basically are they ok to use long term or are they just a quick fix to get you home and the replace pins/link?

    They're a long term solution.

Long term. A lot of people, myself included, put one in by default when installing the chain to make it easier to remove for cleaning/maintenance. Your friend has simply saved you a few pounds and given you some extra convenience.

As others say they can be used long term - but - if one of your links snapped what condition are the others in on that chain ....

On KMC chains (and Sram) the only way to join them is by using a quick link. The pins in the chain are NOT designed to be pushed out and back in with a tool and will fail if you do.

Using a KMC or Sram quick link on a Shimano chain is fine. As long a its the same speed 9,10,11 etc.
