My friend is upgrading hi secteur. He is buying
http://www.wiggle.co.uk/shimano-ultegra ... -wheelset/
however my question is currently there is an 8 speed cassette on the bike. Is it worth changing to a 10 speed and if so will the rest of the bike be compatible with a new 10 speed and chain? This is the bike;

    Is it worth it ...

    The extra two gears gives smaller jumps between rear gears and the benefit is that it's easier to keep to the cadence you prefer - however - with a triple front I find it hard to imagine how it would not be easy to do that already with the range available to your friend with judicious use of front and rear shifting.

    What would the bike need ...

    A ten speed rear dérailleur, ten speed shifter and ten speed chain (probably new rear cable, inner at least) Personally, while it would function, I couldn't live with mismatched shifters and I'm pretty certain that Shimano 2300 doesn't come in ten speed - but, if that's wrong you may be lucky enough to find a single, ten speed rear shifter that matched the current triple front - I doubt it though so for me I would have to buy a pair anyway so they matched. Shifters tend to be expensive unless you are lucky in sales or 2nd hand.

    FWIW I wouldn't bother myself but if your friend finds it hard to keep an even cadence at the rate they prefer it may be to them.

    Cheers for the response. Decided to keep the 8 speed - get a new 8 speed cassette with new chain and the wheel set
