Since I'll be able to get out on the road before I can go off road with my collar bone I thought I would build up the wife's old carrera vulcan for both of us to use. I've tried to build it with as much free/spare parts as possible hence why some things won't match but its ment to be a cheap build.

Frame - 2008 ladies carrera vulcan ( I think thats the year)
Fork - manitou minute elite pro ABS+ 120mm
Crank - standard shite
Front brake - hope XC4 170mm disc closed lever
Rear brake - some cheap shimano cable caliper, avid SD7 lever and 160mm HS1 disc
rear mech - X4 8sp
front mech - LX
chain - standard shite
shifter - STX-RC front/X4 rear 8sp
F.wheel - hope XC, mavic 517, ACI DB spokes (~815g)
R.wheel - standard shite (1180g )
tyres - WTB vulpine
Seat post - standard shite (320g)
saddle - currently standard shite, will be charge spoon ti
stem - currently some old SLC pro stem, will soon be superstar zepher 70mm
bar - currently FSA XC-190. either swapping it for OE fuji 680mm or my old carbon bar that I don't trust after crashing but should be fine for commuting.
Grips - one uberbike will be SRAM lock ons.

bike as it is the now before some parts to be added.

Fork needs a service so bought some push ultra low friction seals. On the look out for a cheap crank that weighs less than a ton and going to try making the wheels tubeless. also looking for a cheap rear wheel to shift some grammage but not totally required. Ideally change to 1x to save weight but thats an expensive change for a commuter hack.

I've since added the bits and gone tubeless. tyres went up no problem at all with track pump though will have to wait as see in morning if they are still inflated.

bike was 27.39 lb as pictured above without front brake, tubeless and the lighter saddle and stem. Crank is 936g, BB probably around 300g so a load to loose there if I can get a crank cheap enough

bike after is 27.5 lb so I gained 50g but have a front brake :D

tested bike out today and found a couple of issues

Rear brake disc/pads were contaminated and dufus me swaped the caliper/lever over to lewis's old elixr3's that I had forgot about before cleaning the disc. cleaned the disc and swapped pads from the front avids and the rear brake now works.

the hope XC4 does work ish but the a couple of pistons are sticky. will have to try and lube them up with some brake fluid and hope that solves it. alternative is to buy a new cheap front brake. The front elixer is too short so by the time I've bought the hose, olive, barb, new pads and bleed kit, its not far off the cost of a new brake.

Stem is a bit too long (70mm) for the width of the bar too so either cut bar or find a cheap shorter stem.

cheers, some parts are new like the crank and the seat post thats coming. I serviced the forks and fitted the easton haven off my ghost which makes the bike much more comfy so will be looking for a stem.
