I am fairly new to the whole MTB scene & I'm looking at using my bike (RockRider 8.1) for my daily commute to work.

Would I be better off getting slicks as it's mainly road riding. If so which ones are worth buying??

This might be of help. If your not taking it off road then slicks/semi slicks would be a good choice.

Depends what you are going to use your bike for. If its road riding then get some slicks.

How much time will it spend on the road and what kind of off road riding do you do?

Slicks or semi-slick is rather semantic, few tyres are truly slick (no tread at all) but you don't need anything with knobbly side tread for just Tarmac.

Lots of choices out there for road tyres for a 26" wheels, Schwalbe city-jet are an excellent budget end tyre, or Decathlon do an even lighter 1.2" slick, above that you need to spend about £25 for a better tyre, or look for some cheap used, I got a friend some Conti Sport Contact off eBay for about £8 the pair.
Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.

Thanks for the advice. I have decided to go with the Schwalbe city-jet but will keep an eye out on eBay for the Conti Sport Contact as well.
