My first post so go easy on me, it's been years since I had a mountain bike.

I've just picked up a 2009 Cube Ltd Pro and am already looking at upgrades. I'll be using the bike mainly to ride to work and the odd Sunday bit of offroad fun.

10 years ago when I was into MTB I had a fully rigid bike, I'm tempted to get some rigid forks for the Cube as I love the challenge of making a bike as light as possible.

Can any of you recommend the best upgrades to shed weight from this bike, I'm guessing the wheels and stem would be a good place to start. But I have absolutely no idea what brands are good these days and light.

Any help and guidance would be appreciated.

Ride it for a while and work out which bits you think could be better.
What's best to buy depends entirely on your budget. If you really want to you could spend £2k on Enve / Chris King wheels. Another £1.4k on a Rockshox RS1 fork just to get you started.

I've just built up a commuter from a Cube Ltd 2011 frame, if you are going rigid then I can recommend Mosso forks (£50 from eBay). Stuck them on mine and they're great.

Mosso forks are great on road, a bit twangy if you go into rougher stuff off road, very light though (mine are 616g).

Have a look at my bike threads in my sig, both fairly light weight, the hardtail got down to 9.6Kg and the FS is at 10.1.

Obvious starters are foam grips, 1x conversion and then going over the bike bit by bit to see what weighs what and were you can save weight, seatpost, bars, stem etc etc.
Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.
  • Thanks for the info so far, that Kraken is light!

I've seen a real shift to the 1x conversion, have to do my research as this is all new to me.

I've been looking at Thomson seatpost/stem, new flat pedals. I'll add to the list 1x conversion and then it's wheels which I believe are heavy on the Cube.

Tyres and tubes are good places to start, tyres as you can get something that grips and rolls better as a well as lighter, tubes as lightweight tubes will save you about 80g in the most critical place for not much outlay.

Thomson is an expensive way of doing it, used or lightweight stuff from the Far East is much more cost effective.
