I'm looking at getting a pair of new tyres Challenge Grifo's.
Please could someone help me out with the different TPI types.

    TPI is threads per inch.

The more threads the fines they are and the suppleler and stronger they are. Lower the number the the less cords so damage to one is a greater issue.

Scroll down to the 'Thread count and thread pattern' paragraph of this article and it tells you pretty much all you need to know. But yes, what nicklouse says is generally true, the higher the better for cyclocross as you want a supple tyre which both helps decrease rolling resistance on rough surfaces and helps protect against pinch flats at low pressures.

If you're looking at the difference between the Grifo open tubulars at 300 tpi and the Grifo Pro at 60 tpi, the difference for cross is night and day. The open tubulars are very supple tyres and when fitted with latex tube can be run at very low tub like pressures. I've raced on them at about 18psi and had no problems with pinch flats. I've not used the 60 tpi version but I imagine they don't perform as well as the open tubulars.

    Thanks both.
One more thing am I right in thinking you can use tubulars with a inner tube?
