Hello All,

First of all please forgive me if this is in the wrong section and the potential ignorance here.

I have a low end MTB, Claud Butler Stone River (http://goo.gl/Aeh4Au), its a 2008 model and its had very little use, having probley only done around 1000 miles, and it's so far spent most of its life hanging in the back of the garage.

Its never going to be used as a Mountain bike, but I wish to use it just as a general purpose, ride to station etc bike, might as well put it to some use as I cant really justify buying a bike for this purpose, with this one hanging around doing nothing.

I'd like to swap the forks for something rigid as the current ones although can be locked out, they still have slight movement when locked out and are adding unnecessary weight and fit some semi slick tyres to reduce drag .

I'd probably go for Schwalbe tyres, could I take the width down from 2.1 to say 1.75 safely? Conditions would be old railway walk type surfaces, as for Forks, I guess these would be suitable? http://goo.gl/BXoPdL

Any suggestions welcome, and sorry again for any stupid questions!

You could go down to 1.5" tyres without a problem, my commuter is on 1.5" slicks on 26" disc braked MTB wheels, get the tubes for the smaller tyre size as well, the reduced inertia will make your bike feel like a sports car compared to the family hatch it is now.

As for Forks, Mosso forks are excellent, they are light (mine are 616g - so barely heavier than a full carbon) and can be had for about £50 on Ebay, just make sure you get the right one for your bike (steerer length, A to C height and brake type), they are also whippy enough to be comfy, will save about 1.5Kg for you.
These will probably suite just fine http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-2010-MOSS ... 2c5bc9a86f

Thanks for your help, much appreciated.

A couple of questions, it has cable disc brakes...I guess thats a standard fixing?

I might take the old forks out and measure to make sure I get the correct replacement, but those you've linked to seem perfect for my usage.

There are two standard mountings IS and PM, the mounts on that fork are IS, PM has the bolts pointing forward as they screw into the back of the fork leg, most cable discs will be IS (international Standard), but even if they are PM (Post Mount) you can get adaptors.
