@£$%&*! Dura Ace 9000 hoods...

Surely some kind of sick joke by Shimano?

No way are they installable by mere mortals with normal hand strength. I tore one of the original hoods when removing them, and noted how easily damaged it was. With this in mind I approached installing a new one with care. As suggested I let it warm for a while before I tried to install it.

20 minutes later I am properly angry having exhausted my patience and thumb/finger strength. And yes, I've broken the replacement so will have to order another pair from SJS.

Is it just me, or is this widely accepted as a ^%$£@! of a task? Is there a magic method or tip that I've missed?

GGGGGGGGGGrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.......................

Yes they are very fragile. I have torn 3 different hoods by just peeling them back to reach the bolt. No way are they as durable as 7900. I am waiting my 3rd set from taiwan because you cannot buy singles. SJS were out of stock. I tried to get a replacement on warranty but Mystic Meg who works at Merlin cycles wasn't having it and tried to claim it was my fault. So they lose my business. This is getting costly for me too. i don't find them too comfy and they are too thin for my liking. But i cannot give up the shifting which is sublime.

A tip to get them off is squirt soapy water underneath with one of those water spray bottles.
  • GCN on youtube recently made a video showing how to fit hoods, they used antibacterial alcohol hand gel to lubricate them since it evaporates leaving no residue, maybe worth a try.

Have a pair incoming. Good to know I'm in for a nightmare. Good tip on the soap though.

I tore two as well, ended up sticking the inside together with a tube patch, and superglue on the rest, been fine for 18 months. Only way I reckon you can get them on is from the wrong end without cables, I tried hairdryer whilst installing, no end of lubricants etc.

I've just torn another one despite warming them thoroughly AND using the hand gel idea. I am neither hamfisted nor particularly strong. I will not go to a bikeshop to ask someone to fit hoods. FFS.

    &^%@£$% stupid design.

I'm going to look into xscream's idea of putting them on from the wrong end without cables. Absolutely ridiculous.

Hair spray is better, it evaporates/drys better once the hoods are in place better. Used to use it to install grips on my MotoX bikes back in the day. They're often uber tight to install, for obvious reasons.

    Are these worth a go?

They don't fit Dura Ace 9000 hoods.

Well, I got my new hoods in. They are for DA 9070 - but I assume they're the same as the 9000 mechanical ones.

Had no issue getting the old one off and the new one on. Did use a bit of alcohol spray to slide it on.

Only gripe would be it probably got a little too stretched going on for my liking. But since riding it, it seems fine.

    They are a different shape.

Sorry if it wasn't clear - the 9070 hoods went on my 9070 shifters! I just assumed the 9000 and 9070 hoods were the same.

i am interested in how well they fit. Do they look odd, any gaps or flappy bits or are they tight ? Any chance of a pic ?
Im going to try this with some ultegra 6870 hoods on 9000 for the grippy texture. They are cheaper and have thicker rubber than 9070.

Sorry looks like i mis-read your post. Still going to try 6870 on 9000 :)
