Is it Possible to Descend a Twisty Col this Fast?

My opinion is no, but curious to see what others think;

This is a very nice little col close to Palma, Majorca, (the Military climb) but one guy is way in front on the descent with a speed of 68km/h.

Now that kind of speed may be possible on a long fast Alpine descent like the latter stages of Galibier or Telegraphe, but this col has tight hairpins and short straights with nowhere to build up speed. (Although it does have a lovely new coat of thick black tarmac...!

I've never averaged 68 Kmh on an Alpine descent... 55 is more realistic... to average over 60 for a few Km you need to have the full road at your disposal and be sure that no car is coming up behind a that corner

I think NapoleanD has hit the nail on the head. The watts and cadense are pretty constant all the way down. So 50+kph through the corners whilst pedaling! Definitely not a real ride.

Yepp, that'll be it. According to the ride stats the big hairpin bend was done at 40mph without slowing at all. Pretty much impossible, and not even a case of leaving the GPS on accidentally whilst in a car/motorbike as they would probably be slower round corners like that (as seen in the pro races).

Yep, that's kind of my opinion too, and yet his Spanish mate is sticking up for him saying, No, No, this guy really is amazing downhill, it's for real......yeah right!

I like how there's no drop in cadence. Were he actually defending that fast at that cadence then he would be skipping his pedals off the asphalt. Chopper.

No idea on if the ratio is sufficient to maintain the speed, but the bends have good sight lines, so you could hold a racing apex giving you could see through your exit. Does he accelerate on the straights?

Well, to do 68km/h you'd be pedalling out a 53-11 like a madman, and that includes THROUGH the bends!! Pedal strike anyone?!

And no matter how good your sight line is through the bend, I'm not sure even a Formula 1 car could take them that quick.....

would be a stretch to hold 40mph on a purpose built hill climb motorbike through there.

Yep, that's the col, although the descent in question is over the other side.

You can see the huge difference in the surfaces of the two videos - it was retarmacked early 2015.

What's cool is that hardly any cars ever use this road, so the new tarmac has been done specifically for bicycles.

I don't think its a motorbike either HR is 160 and speed is about the same for every segment, the small climbs 2-3% are all over 30 mph I don't think so.

    Doped gpx file surely?

It would be hard for a motorcyclist who'd still need to be pretty talented to ride like a bike, the temptation leverage the better brakes on the entrance and accelerate on the exit would be too great.

How does someone on a motorbike have any cadence? Clearly not a real ride.

That's a joke, right? Rock-steady cadence at that speed around hairpins? This better be a joke because I don't have the patience for a physics lesson...

Which is still a errrmmmm BIKE!
Lol the speed alone isnt the question its the speed around the corners!!!

Yep the cadence is the issue, how many riders wouldn't line the inside up and the outside down, just for a second or two as they take the apex - its one of those habitual things.

Well, it's now been flagged and that hasn't been contested by our Spanish friend, so it would seem that he knows he's flogging a dead horse with this one.

Very weird that someone would do that, guess it's the lure of that glittering crown.....but you then have to question any other 'achievements' he might have....

I do have to ask who gives a crap? It's only Strava, sometimes it's a bit of fun but you get some proper nerds who think it's the be all and end all.

It's a laugh to steal a KOM from a friend and it's a great tool to track your improvement but show me a KOM that wasn't set with a tailwind and I'll eat my shoes. It's not racing, just because you've taken a KOM from someone doesn't mean you're faster than them.

so he likes motorbiking too :-)

    or simply digital EPO.....

I can get down a hill reasonably quickly and keep up with most but that does seem 'not normal'

I have a KOM the same way. Am I remotely mithered? No. If it gets flagged so be it.
If you want to compare with others, race. I have a KOM on a tiny (I mean TINY) section of Sa Calobra due to a GPS glitch. Just shows how it doesn't really mean anything.
Every inch of road near me is a segment. Some of which are part of time trial circuits. Should we flag those rides done on a full TT rig with a tailwind? Some are part of local road race/chain gang circuits. Should we flag those because riding in a group is easier/faster?
Imo strava was better when it was just climbs and TT circuits.
