Hi all
Currently creating a holiday cottage (near kirroughtree/glentrool/in the galloway forest)and many people have asked if I have MTB's for hire.
I could get them from the local bike shop but I'm sure their are ways of getting bikes cheaper direct from the manufacturer. Can this be done and anyone give any pointers

Unless you want a lot, you won't get them truly direct from the manufacturer.
Best value for money are Carrera or Voodoo from Halfords or the Rockrider from Decathlon or Calibre from Go Outdoors, all of those except for the Voodoo is where the bike brand is owned by the retailer so it cuts out a layer of cost, so kind of direct from the manufacturer, in the case of the Voodoo the UK bikes are only sold in Halfords and are different from those sold in other countries, apparently Halfords have some input into the specification.
Budget per bike and proposed usage would help, do you want them for people to use for gentle family rides around the country or more aggressive 'real' mountain biking, or would you want to some suitable for just the former and some better ones for those willing to pay a bit more?
As an indication, for the 'family' usage you'd probably need to spend about £250-300 a bike, for the latter at least £350 but it may be better value to buy something better (say about £550) and attract more serious riders who would be willing to pay more per usage.Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0 -
We sell direct to hire centers/fleets at a (significantly) reduced price. That said, our base model is £995 at retail so you aren't getting a cheap bike either way, but you do get direct support from the manufacturer, super rock solid warranty and parts service etc. ben@birdmtb.co.uk if you're interested.A Flock of Birds

Maintenance will be done by me.
Probably a mix of some family bikes due to the good forest roads in the immediate area but definatly want some real mountain bikes. Good ride links to Kirroughtree and Glentrool and some nice single track very close by.0 -
For the family end I'd go with something like the Rockrider 500 from Decathlon http://www.decathlon.co.uk/rockrider-50 ... nformation, for the better bikes, and depending on how much you want to spend, the 520 is a bike 'good enough' for proper trail use - Hydraulic brakes and a Fork normally only found on bikes over £450 http://www.decathlon.co.uk/rockrider-52 ... nformation
Decathlon have recently rehashed the range and have some excellent value bikes.Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0
