Sticking Freehub

Been given an old Marin hard-tail MTB to look at.
First freehub wasn't engaging at all, so the cassette would spin freely in either direction... I took the cassette, axle, and cones out (looked at bearings; pretty good - cleaned and greased anyway). The freehub started engaging normally, so I assumed it was working.
Now, even if I leave the cones really loose, the freehub is really really draggy. As soon as I tighten the lock-ring it begins to drag when it should spin freely (though it still ratchets).
So, do I disassemble the freehub? Failing that, should I just bin the wheel and get a new one? It'll need to be a 26" capable of taking Shimano 7 speed; where's cheapest?

Sometimes parts break. Sometimes you crash. Sometimes it’s your fault.

Bah. I had one of the bearing washers the wrong way round. It was being clamped by the lockring. Reversed the washer and hey it works correctly. :roll:Sometimes parts break. Sometimes you crash. Sometimes it’s your fault.0
