Anyone have any directions on what tool i need to disassemble and replace the crank bearings seen in photo. i have a Wilier Izoard XP. i have standard tools for cheaper biked but not sure where to start with this.

The crank bearings appear to be held in place int eh Gold unit pictured at this link, (i cant upload any photos) i need the tool that one might use to disassemble the gold item pictured in bottom right.

look forward to hearing how silly my request is.

Cheers

You simply replace the BB i.e. unscrew the cups and fit new ones - standard external bearing BB tool. The bearings themselves are pressed into the cups and aren't really user serviceable.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

If they are shot. Throw them away and buy new ones. They are called FSA megaexo bottom brackets.

If you really want to get at the bearings inside the cups you can use a small flat head screwdriver and remove the black cover. The covers are usually quite brittle and can break in doing so.
  • ok, thankyou both, im not really fussed about getting at the bearings i just need to replace them, how do i unscrew the unit, its only at 40nm but that a bt much even for my knuckles.

Is there a special tool specifically for this bottom bracet, after taking the alan bolt out i can just see right through to the drive side, throught the tube.

    Read this tutorial

    and watch this video

Undo the 8mm hex bolt whilst pulling the crank arm gently until it comes off. The hex bolt uses a self-extracting bolt and will stay in the crank arm.

To remove the cups. You'll need a Shimano BB spanner or FSA mega exo spanner. Either will work.

When removing the old bb cups. Remember the threads in the frame are opposite. i.e you screw towards the back of the bike on each side of the bike to loosen the cups.

When screwing in new bb cups. Do the opposite as above, screw towards the handlebars on each side too install them. just do it slowly and use grease.

That description is ambiguous. It only works if the tool is below the BB. Many people work on the BB with the bike on it's wheels and pushing down on the spanner. In which case, have the spanner handle forwards of the BB and push down to loosen.

For the avoidance of doubt the non drive side cup has a normal clockwise thread to tighten and the drive side is reverse threaded anticlockwise.

(Unless you have an Italian threaded BB in which case both sides are normal, clockwise)

Whoops my mistake. Please ignore. I am getting mixed up with pedal threads. keef66 is correct.

Right side (driveside) = Lefty tighty

Left side (non driveside) = Righty tighty

If the bike is facing the right way up on its wheels.

I always have to think about which way it is for pedals first, and then the BB is the opposite. For some reason I can picture removing pedals, but when I imagine BB cups I forget which way they go. Odd.
