Mixed Terrain Equivalents To Maxxis Detonators

I have been given a fairly decent hybrid bike that has Maxxis Detonators 700 x 28c road tyres on.

I wanted to do more riding along canal tow paths and gravelled paths so I decided to change the tyres for mixed terrain tyres. So far I have purchased 2 sets and both have had larger sidewalls than the detonators.

I asked my local bike shop for some advice as to what was the problem and I was told that it was because the tyres had both metric and imperial measurements on the sidewall. I did say that that didn't make any sense to me but I know nothing.

Can anyone help me find a set of mixed terrain tyres (or something I can use for gravel) that has a small sidewall.

Sorry for the long story but I'm ready for throwing the bike in the canal let alone ride along it!!

Many thanks.

not sure i understand the issue with the sidewalls - is clearance for the tyre an issue?

i run these on my 3 speed:

(and the knobbly version on the rear, but a pair of the above would be ok too):

you'd need a bit of clearance to fit both of course

Unless you tell us the size of the two sets of tyres you have already tried, that have too tall a sidewall, you cannot be usefully advised. So give us the figures as shown on the sidewall of those tyres. What make/model of bike is it, what brakes does it have V type or disc?
  • Sorry if I've not been too clear in my original post.

    Yes, clearance is the issue.

The 1st set of tyres I purchased were Schwalbe Land Cruiser Bike Tyre 700x35c, the 2nd set are Michelin Transworld Sprint 700x35c.

If I were to put the Maxxis Detonator tyres against the other 2, the Detonators from the bead to the top of the tread are not as high (possibly by 5mm).

The Bike is an Aluxx Butted 6000 series giant fcr 4. The brakes are v-type.

I hope this explains a little better but thanks for the replies anyway.

Ok first things first I would find another bike shop.

Have a read of this for info about tyre sizing

    http://www.sheldonbrown.com/tire-sizing.html

The C is the width bit and a wider tyre will also be a taller tyre.

That is your problem going from a 25 to a 35.

  • Thanks nicklouse,

I've read the thread you posted, very interesting!

My head is really spinning now!

In your opinion, would I be OK to go no more than a 32C tyre?

Kenda Karvs 28c might be what your looking for. They have a grippy tread and come up smaller in size than they should be. i have a set ,only 1 ride on them so far but at 80 psi they were very grippy, comfy and fast on tarmac. i've not them used them off road yet. But did buy them to be used on canal paths, bridleways etc.

They weigh 275 grams each for 28c.
