What's at the bottom of your commuting bag?

First day back after Easter break today. Realised I need mitts rather than the full finger windproof gloves that were sitting in my helmet. Had a rummage through my bag to find some.

To my surprise, I found nine mitts. Three red, three blue and three black. A pair in each colour, but an odd pair, in that the gloves were the same but of obviously different ages.

I also found a sock. Just the one. And a tubigrip. Some coins, and some bolts. Some useless overshoes which kept my feet neither warm nor dry (immediately escorted to the bin) and a pair of shoelaces.

I have a limited recollection of first having acquired much of this stuff.

What's lurking in your bag, long forgotten?
Swim. Bike. Run. Yeah. That's what I used to do.

LOL - sounds worse than a woman's handbag! I clear mine out periodically, though I do seem to have a complete set of spare lenses for my glasses, plus another pair of glasses (also with complete selection of lenses).

    Mainly cables.

Lots and lots of different cables for charging lights, gps, phones, music players, etc. I don't really know what most fo them are and I probably don't own the devices any more.

    Top Teak Multi tool
    Puncture repair kit
    Pair of fingerless gloves
    Buff
Charging cable and headphones for iPhone
Some change in both sterling and euro
    A pen
    A Cat5 cable
    A T-Pee interdental brush

Some of that stuff might now come out...

I found a piece of wood and quite a bit of saw dust. I don't mind the saw dust but I've been carrying the wood up and down a 1 1/2 hill for weeks.

Ha ha Easter break good one, what you meant was ban.

Did you by any chance find your marbles?

Yes. They were in the bottom of your bag. Next to the ladies' underwear and "special interest" magazines. Mercifully, they were stuck to neither of those items, which was a pleasant surprise.

Is that a 'Carry On' thing?
The wood was in my pannier on a rack not inserted in my saddle, I'd have noticed that.

    Just dug a little deeper and found;
    some reflective sticky tape
    a large plastic bag
a Lezyne helmet light with bracket (it was a free gift  )

I am starting to see my bag as the equivalent of the handicapping system in horse racing

I have speculated a couple of times over the last few weeks (cold morning rides/warm evening rides) that were I to get hit by a car on the way home and someone to go through my bag afterwards they'd assume I'm some sort of travelling cycle clothing sales person. I'm in spring stuff at the mo in the mornings, but I don't wear a lot of that on the way home, and then I still have a lot of my cold winter accessories in my bag.

    Whats a commuting bag?

I have a small saddle bag with CO2 and a spare tube in it, does this count?

1 smelly sock (the other one is at home in my drawer waiting to be re-united (along with 4 or 5 other single socks)), an old toothbrush and a front light mount that I've spent the last month looking for.
  • Mine is relatively normal, except for a plethora of batteries and multitools.

Anytime I see a multi tool lying around the house.. ooh. where should that be? I've probably forgotten to put it in my pannier. chuck it in there.

Similarly in winter.. pack pannier. did I have spare batteries in there for the lights? cant remember, chuck some in just in case.

Come spring I find 10-12 batteries in there, and year round I have ~3 multi tools.

On a mountain biking course I went on the instructor was doing the basic 'things you should take on a ride' lesson, and was emptying out his kit to illustrate.. By the time he got to the bottom he'd emptied out four multitools and was squinting in vain at its features to try and find a justification for having so many :)

I bought a new one the other day so its still quite fresh.

    But I do have:

    Headband
Winter gloves (because if I leave them I'll need them)
    Arm and leg warmers
    Packable rain jacket
    Umbrella
    Pump

I did find a load of small old tools at the bottom of my old one...

Well, there's a hefty great allen key that I put in there for tightening up the chainset on a bicycle that I no longer ride.... everything else I pretty much expected to find.
