Buying First Bike

Hi everyone,
I am currently looking at buying my first mountain bike however, I'm a bit undecided. Any help would be great.
The bike will mostly be used for commuting about 3 miles each way and used on trails every few weeks.
My budget for the bike is £450.
I have access to a bike to work scheme, however it only allows bikes from Halfords to be bought.
That said, I can afford to buy a bike outright but the bike would have to be quite a bit better than the ones available from Halfords.
So far the Carrera Kraken (£306.00), Voodoo Hoodoo (£271.92) and Calibre Two.Two (£379.99
) have caught my eye. The prices for the Carrera and Voodoo Hoodoo are what I'd pay through the bike to work scheme.
What would you guys suggest?
Thanks
