£650 trail hard tail - first bike

one of my mates is looking for his first 'proper' mountain bike which can be a bit of a do it all - cycle & tow paths, some easier mtb trails (sherwood pines etc) and something that will remain capable as his confidence grows, gets more competent and tries more difficult trails.
he's tried more xc oriented set up's in the past (100mm travel c 70 / 71 degree head angles) and didn't like the twitchyness (obviously not all the same, but you get the idea), so ideally looking for something a little more relaxed and possibly a bit more travel.
budget is £650 / 700, ideally new, any recommendations as unfortunately i have no current knowledge of this part of the market.
thanks

Voodoo Bizango? Carrera Fury? A Rockrider from Decathlon?

All options worth considering, although the Voodoo is a 29er, Carrera 27.5" and the Rockrider 26"Framebuilder

Come across these, anyone got any experience?

Any of the above mentioned will be good.
Really depend on what wheel size he's after.
I have the previous version of the Fury - very capable for what I want it for, which is mainly trail centres and off-piste single track stuff.
Remember also that if you get a British Cycling Membership you can get 10% off at Halfords (including sales prices etc.). If you time it right you can end up with a fairly chunky discount by taking advantage of web offers and/or discounted gift vouchers._______________
