Frame / stem question

Afternoon All,
As I am still torn between M or L frame question is:
What would be the difference in geometry / handling / riding in the following options (also which one is more recommended):
a) longer frame i.e. size L with short stem;
or
b) shorter / smaller frame i.e. M with longer stem.
PS.
As said somewhere I sat (didn't ride it) on Anthem X2 26" (2013) in size L and think it should be ok if with shorter stem
also
I rode an Anthem X2 27.5 (2015) in size M - I felt a bit cramped and I lifted front wheel nearly every time I pushed it harder ???
However, I also sat on Anthem SX 27.5 in size M and felt OK (may be the longer fork - don't know).
Cheers,
Chris

How tall are you to give us some idea.
Long or short legs?
If you're over 6 feet it would probably be a LargeNow where's that "Get Out of Crash Free Card"0 -
To me a large sounds too big.
Don't forget that wider bars make a cockpit feel shorter while raising the grips make it feel longer (in terms of your upper body position).Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0
