New Shoes causing foot pain

Did 100km yesterday with a pair of new Giro Trans E70 shoes. After around 30km my left foot started to become very painful, almost a numbing pain on the ball of my foot. My left foot is smaller than my right so it isn't that my shoes are too small. I bought size 43.5 giro and previously had 44 specialized, very little difference in size and the specialized were slightly too roomy.

Could it be cleat position? Or did I tighten them up too much? I have been used to Velcro and new shoes have a ratchet which is capable of being very tight.

Lastly the stack hight of each shoe is very different with the new Giro shoes being around 0.5cm lower than the specialized.

Cheers

Could be either/both. Next time try loosening the shoe a bit (especially the strap nearest the toes), if that doesn't work try moving the cleat back.

    Assuming it's probably this:

Did your Specialized shoes have a BG insole and if so did you transfer it to the Giro's? If they are BG and you didn't transfer them over it's worth trying, the BG insoles have a metatarsal button that I certainly notice helps a lot with numbness

i doubt it really makes a difference but the Spesh shoes have a wedge built into the sole to cant the foot. (Steve Hogg bike fit guru certainly thinks built in Spesh wedges don't add any benefit) However wedges help spread the force across the foot. I get foot pain without them. In my view the fact that your Giro's won't have the built in wedge is unlikely to be creating the issue but I would still try putting a single cleat wedge (thick edge towards the bike) on the new shoes. It may help. A local bike shop who does fitting should have single ones to sell or I think i-ride now sell the BikeFIt ones.

I believe there are different causes but mine disappeared when I adjusted the cleat position. 'Twas miraculous relief...
