Narrow 8-speed

I am considering changing cassette and chain (front rings look ok) on an old bike. 8-speed, '97 lx rear mech and relevant shifter. When I look on crc or similar they reference 'narrow 8-speed.' What is this? Does this mean if I buy a narrow 8-speed cassette the shifting distance of my mech/shifter will be larger than the gaps between the narrow 8-speed cassette?
I'm assuming a narrow 8-speed chain will still be fine on my non narrow (as far as I'm aware!) crankset?

8 speed is 8 speed does not matter about any other words."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."
