Campag 11-speed conversion

Hi,

I hope this is the right place to post this vs. buying advice!

I'm considering a Campag 11-speed conversion on my road bike, primarily so I can take advantage of the increased range offered by the current 11-speed cassettes. I also need to supply parts for my cyclocross bike so what I'm considering doing would give me shifters, rear mech and possibly cassette and chain.

What I'm looking at is replacing the current 10-speed Centaur rear mech, shifters and cassette with 11-speed chorus (primarily to get the options of running 11-27, 12-29 etc.) and retaining the existing 10-speed centaur crank, brakes and front mech.

I've read reports of this working absolutely fine up until about 2012 but very little since then. Has anyone tired this out with the 2015 Chorus parts and does it work? I can't see any real reason why not, unless the amount of cable pull for the front mech has changed perhaps and the same with the brakes.

Any feedback gratefully received!

Cheers,
Steve

  • According to this site, the derailleur pull ratio is the same on all campagnolo derailleurs, so you might be able to keep the derailleur and just change shifters, cassette and chain.

They reckon 10 and 11 speed chainsets are interchangeable here:

    Hi,

Thanks for the links - I've read that second link previously and didn't come away convinced. The main thing I was suspecting had changed was the front mech cable pull.

To be clear, I don't want to keep the rear derailleur - I want to move the 10 speed shifters and rear mech to my cross bike. I'm thinking I can just keep it simple and retain only the 10s chainset and brakes though.

    Cheers,
    Steve

FWIW, I ran a 10sp Record chainset on an 11sp set up and it worked perfectly. My son is doing the same on his bike and it's fine too.

Cable pull changed for Chorus and above for the RD so I would definitely research the compatibility with older FD. The new Campagnolo FD's (Chorus and above) have a much longer pull arm for better leverage and that makes me think that the left shifter may have changed too. I did notice a post in a forum from someone who had bought 2015 Athena derailleurs and 2015 Chorus shifters and they were not compatible.
  • Just servicing my bottom bracket, and I noticed in the technical manual that the Power-Torque system (as used for Athena, Centaur and Veloce) does not specify different dimensions for the 10 and 11 speed varieties - I assume that they are identical - and the 11 speed just specifies a narrower chain.
