Gear ratio

I have 52/36, TA rings with Super Campy 11 groupset.

I went up the Mortirolo 5 years ago on a different bike with a 50/34 12-27, though I used a 27 a lot of time, I managed to finish the climb ok, though there were a few times where my speed was no more than 3mph. I remember my Garmin reaching between 11% to 28% most of the way, even though the reading maybe wrong I saw my gradient above 20% a lot of the time! A grueling 12km climb, my hardest. Felt like Ventoux was a walk in the park!

I'd rather keep the 52/36 combination and buy a new 11-29 cassette, is this combination exactly the same as a 50/34 11-27? I'm hopeless with gear ratios?

Well the critical combination is your lowest gear ie 34 x 27 vs 36 x 29.

With the former, for every complete revolution of the cranks the rear wheel will complete 1.26 revolutions, and with the latter 1.24. So 36 x 29 is ever so slightly easier.

ok, thanks. How do you arrive at 1.24 and 1.26 out of interest?

I now have 34x29 and really feel the difference compared to 34x27. I'd go as low as you can.

    34/27 = 1.26 (35.26)

    36/29 = 1.24 (34.76)

    34/29 (my ratio) = 1.17 (32.83)

Or multiple by 28" to give you the "inch" figure in brackets above which is easier to undestand - its the distance travelled in inches for each revolution of the wheel.

I suppose the answer is.....get my calculator out!

34/29 would give me some room, I would never need this combination where I ride. But perhaps this a combination (52/29) would work well for a dig up a short steep hill or may come in handy in a race or some Sunday afternoon fun!

For the Mortirolo a 29 would come in handy, its a vicious climb. So yep made up my mind 52/36 - with a 11-29, glad Campagnolo now make this combination. I could go for a 34/29 but don't think I need it.

Please don't deliberately use 52 / 29, it makes my teeth itch just imagining it...
