Creaking SPD pedals?

Hi all. I need some advice re a regular issue with my 'cross bike / rough road bike. The SPDs (Shimano Trail 530's) creak like a bugger. Originally thought it was my shoes (Spesh Defrosters) but the same thing happens with my summer shoes (Spesh BG MTB Pro). I've also put some light oil on the saddle rails, re-greased and tightened the pedals, and greased and refitted the seatpost, so have come back to the pedals/cleats.
Is it common for the metal cleat/pedal interface to creak on these pedals? Are the higher range XT/XTR pedals similarly afflicted? After recently wrestling with a disk brake issue which I've now finally solved, this is the one aspect that is now spoiling and otherwise sweet running ride :? cheers!

Is It on both sides or just one?
I have a creak on my right hand shoe/pedal/crank.
Haven't figured it out yet and it's annoying the hell out of me! Only happens on the down stroke, I first thought it was a loose cleat screw but they're really solid.GT Avalanche 3.0 Hydro

My time pedals creak if I don't lube the platforms occasionally.
The SPDs on my winter bike would probably creak if I didn't give them a quick squirt with GT85 when I'm cleaning the chain after riding in the rain.0 -
I occasionally get some creaking from my SPDs. A squirt of lube on the pedals and cleats stops it. It may be the soles of the shoes creaking against the pedal body.0

Silicone spray lube has solved many creaks for me. Its worth a try.0

Always got some creaking when I used spds on the road bike, gave in and got some spd-sl pedals and new shoes, no more creaking. Spds on my mtb probably creak but I don't notice it, the ones on my cross bike are new so so far no issues....
lube 'em up seems to be the way forward.0 -
I use SPDs on the road and my cleat/pedal interface squeaks a lot, it's annoying because you can actually feel it a bit in your foot
I found they worked perfectly until the first time the pedals got wet, from then on they squeaked, so now I just lube the interface
first I tried wd40 / gt85 and neither lasted much longer than 40 miles, now I use a drop of chain lube and it lasts about 80 - 120 miles before creaking again0 -
Well I've never in over 20 years had a creaking SPD.0

Mine's worse on the left, and definitely more pronounced on the downstroke. Think I'll try some lube and see how that goes. cheers for the advice.
EDIT: tried some very light oil on the cleats and pedals before heading out this evening. Now blissfully quiet, TRP Spyre discs still behaving themselves and the Randonneur Pro tyres soaking up the potholes well.
