2nd bike time

Hi everyone.
Im looking to invest in a second bike as my current steed (Spesh Allez Elite) has been used pretty much daily for commuting, general rides and the occasional 100-mile sportive in all sorts of weather conditions for the last few years. Consequently, it has got trashed.
I was thinking of making the Allez a winter bike, and get a nice new shiny something for dry/summer use. However, it only has space for 25mm's and there are no bosses for proper mudguards (have tried various made-to-fit mudguards, but im not a fan). Therefore i dont think the allez would make much of a winter bike.
Instead i thought about a CX bike for winter/commuting use. From what ive seen though, is the gearing seems to be similar to a mountain bike. Are you able to get cx bikes with the same sort of ratios as a normal road bike, or would it be too much if you were to take it offroad? (Which i probably would do if i had the means to).
Performance-wise on the road, how much different to a normal roadie are they?
Price-wise, im looking at the £1000-1500 region.

C'dale CAADX 105 - v. Nice.
Gearing is 46/36 on the front - not really any issue with it on or off road. All the gear, but no idea...0 -
This range would be the ideal winter bike / commuter:

Willier GTR 20140 -
Worth looking at the Cube Cross range. They do one with mechanical discs and 105 for about £1000 or an Ultrgra model with hydraulics for about £1400. Both the same aluminium frame which is mudguard compatible.0

Sorry for the delay responding guys, thanks for the info.
However, doing a little more thinking, i think buying a nice new bike just to keep for wet weather/winter is a bit of a waste, so i think i will be buying a new "proper" road bike and keeping the Specialized as a back up. Thanks again.0
